Stepping into the World of Stained Glass

Stepping into the World of Stained Glass
April 10, 2026 by coreycanvas

It’s always a bit shocking to see how long it’s been since my last blog post. But then again always starting a post by talking about how long it’s been is a pretty over-used blogging formula. Let’s get to it… I’m making stained glass now! Or as I would have said as a kid, “staying glass.”

To start at the beginning, I took a three-week beginner’s course at The Glass House back in November. I always thought I would enjoy stained glass, but I had no idea I would just love it. The course consisted of making a suncatcher and a panel. It was a very good starting point for me.

Start simple, right?
Pretty darn good for Day 1!
My Dad not only instilled a love of stained glass in me, but also a less-conventional love of seagulls.

So the next step after the class was setting up my own space… Thankfully and luckily all of my Dad’s old equipment and supplies still existed. That made things about a million times easier and less expensive, but was not without it’s challenges. The soldering iron for example:

Try to guess which was the old one!

It honestly took days of wrenching and WD-40-ing to get the old one out. And then of course the inside of the iron just sort of crumbled away. Still it was worth a try! The fact that Dad’s old grinder still worked was amazing! And he had obviously cleaned it after the last time it was used.

Next I threw together a storage system for the glass…

See? Luckily and thankfully! This is just a fraction of the glass that had been hanging around all these years.

Next was a workspace, but let’s stop there for now and pick this up again in a new post…
