The Official Home of Beach Season 2K23

The Official Home of Beach Season 2K23
October 2, 2023 by coreycanvas

It’s October 1st, and I hate to say it, but Beach Season 2023 is very likely over.

The good news is there is no reason why we can’t live vicariously through these sketches. This year (and possibly last year) Tiffany and I discovered the joy of the day trip. Drive to a spot in the morning, drive home at night. No hotels, no Airbnb, just the cost of the gas and maybe a pizza or two.
And it turns out there are quite a few beaches within range of Toronto. I’ll leave “range” open to interpretation, but we had some good beach time this year.
So here’s a Summer’s worth of plein-air watercolour beach sketches.

First up is good ol’ Wasaga Beach.

By the end of the day at Wasaga, some beautiful clouds had formed over the water to the west. When the sun went down behind them the light effects were gorgeous.

Trying to capture those sun rays from behind the clouds. It also rained out over the water and added to the whole thing. I swear it really looked like that!

Don’t forget that Toronto is on a lake, too. It might not seem like it, but it is. It might really, really not seem like it 99% of the time, but it’s on a lake. And the lakeshore is quite beautiful.

Another one from the same day on the Toronto lakeshore.

Lake Simcoe is pretty close by! This one is from Barrie. I loooove painting water. There are infinite ways to go about it and it’s always a pleasure. (Especially from a beach)

And of course there are the Toronto Islands with their beaches. This is from Ward’s Island.

Another from Ward’s. A boat went past! A whole pirate-ship-type sailing-boat. I swear it looked like that! (That land mass in the background is part of the Leslie Spit)

Let’s be fair, you can’t always drop everything and drive to the beach, so here are two from my balcony.

I had to take the fern down to paint this one, but that’s just one of the secrets behind my cloud paintings.

Alright, alright, fine. Back to the beaches. This is from Sandbanks Provincial Park in Prince Edward. I’d never been before! This was my first trip to the Sandbanks. We went to the Dunes side. And yes, I had Dune with me (the third one, Children of Dune), but I didn’t read any of it whilst at the Dunes. I was busy painting and beaching.

It was a pretty grey day by the time we got settled and the wind was picking up… it was also about a week ago, so late September. It was great, don’t get me wrong, but it was chilly. Anyhow, I had to paint the Dunes!

The final, penultimate beach day of 2023… save the best for last… this was yesterday, September 30th… Sauble Beach! My personal favourite. A heck of a drive, but a very nice one. It was a beautiful day and much warmer than the Sandbanks day.

Some amount of people-watching is always great at the beach, and though it was the emptiest I’ve ever seen Sauble, there were some interesting events. One of the nicer ones was a couple who must have walked by once or twice and asked how my painting turned out. They were very kind about it, so I showed them both.
Ooh yeah and the sandbars were really good that day. Such an interesting effect on the colour of the water.
Great way to end (sorry, but let’s be real here) BEACH SEASON 2K23!!
